New Bern is also the original Colonial Capital of North Carolina and was settled in part because of its access to the sea. Stroll back in time on the grounds of Tryon Palace or take a carriage ride through our quaint downtown on streets traveled by presidents from Washington to Truman. Our downtown offers a vibrant economy with many restaurants, shops, businesses, professional offices, government offices, churches, theater and more and more - residences. It’s like downtowns used to be, but better. Come see. 

Our area is for the active.  We have award winning golf courses, a national forest with hiking trails, festivals and histroic homes tours, and the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic are less than an hour away.  The list goes on.

But prepare to relax, too.  You can watch the boats go by, witness beautiful sunrises, take slow strolls by the river or through the historic district.  Our outstanding medical community will keep you in great shape through all the years you spend here.  Our traffic is not as hectic, either.  And our many churches will welcome you if you desire.

  Built in 1904, Centenary Methodist Church combines Romanesque and Chateauesque styles. Two massive towers flank the impressive main entrance porch composed of an arcade of arches supported by columns. Beautiful stained glass windows reflect natural sunlight.
